12 Steps

Not to be confused with the 12 steps of recovering alcoholics, although these 12 steps could be just as healing and life-changing. These steps I refer to are places which should be witnessed in a life-time, and, as inspiration strikes, should lead you on to the next with curiosity and child-like eagerness. For me, I would like to take a step in each place before the age of 70, which means a lot of travelling and a lot of film to be developed over the next 50 years. For people that have already witnessed the following places, the response is always similar – they felt an overwhelming sense of awe and tranquillity. In no particular order, here are the top 10 places to step into in a lifetime:

1) Hawaii

Not only a beautiful place to catch a tan or swim in the crystal clear waters, but also a place steeped in culture. Although it is technically a U.S. state, America and Hawaii could not be more different. Whereas America and other big cities always seem in a rush, Hawaii just oozes relaxation and Zen. Hawaii is one place where it seems so easy to become wrapped up in the culture and embody the Hawaiian life style. Whether this involves taking part in a hula contest or simply enjoying the festivities at a traditional Luau there is no place to be unhappy in this picturesque paradise. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why many people have chosen this holiday destination as their home.

2) Paris

Often referred to as the fashion capital of the world as well as the city of love, how could anyone not want to visit the beautiful city of Paris. What self-respecting woman has not swooned at the sight of the attractive couple kissing beneath the Eiffel Tower and dreamt of going there herself? While Paris may not be able to provide the man, it is said that their is always romance in the air. It may be the aphrodisiac food, the sexy accents, or the European culture in all its glory, but there are so many reasons to visit “grande Paris.” For those not looking to be swept off their feet in the city of love, then the fashion in Paris is sure to lure. France is the city to thank for the likes of Chanel, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy and Hermes to name a few. It is also home to the Louvre museum, the top tourist spot in France. If for no other reason, art lovers are sure to adore Paris purely for this beautiful museum – after all, you can’t spell Louvre without love. Whether you visit Paris for the architecture, the food, the art or the fashion it is a place you will never forget and will never regret stepping into.

3) Africa

Imagine Toto’s 80’s classic ringing in your ears as you cruise through an African Safari, taking in the scenery and the glorious animals in their natural habitat. There is nothing more beautiful than the image of the sun setting on an African plane – hence the choice of picture. A visit to Africa would bring you closer to nature and allow you to witness each animals beauty up close – I’m afraid it doesn’t quite have the same effect in a zoo. Although you often need a jab to visit this country, it would be worth it for the wonderful pictures you would capture on Safari. Also, for those who grew up in the 90’s like I did, the chance to see the relive The Lion King is just too good to pass up.

4) Australia

The only chance you will ever get to say the phrase “g’day mate” without immediate alienation is when stepping off the plane onto Australian turf. Like everything else in life, the beautiful country comes with its pluses and minuses. The many deadly animals and the exhausting plane journey is nothing compared to the wonderful landmarks, crystal blue waters, tropical fish and die-hard surfers that can be found in Australia. Whilst some of the animals in the Land of Oz are definitely ones to steer clear of, you cannot leave Australia without visiting the Great Barrier Reef and scuba-diving with the amazing tropical fishes. As a movie fan myself, I would be adamant to find a clown fish, a blue surgeonfish and a sea turtle a la “Finding Nemo,” but others might enjoy taking a stab at surfing or other water sports which make Aussie so exciting.

5) Egypt

Having the honour of observing one of the seven wonders of the world is more than enough reason to hop on a plane to Egypt. Both the pyramids and the Sphinx are there to witness among the golden sands and are both incredible man-made creations.  It is possible to get an all inclusive holiday to Egypt for a bargain price which is another great reason to visit, as even people on a budget can enjoy the sites. While you’re in the country, brave the sore bottom for a camel ride through the desert to really go all Egyptian.

6) China

China, or to be more specific, the Great Wall of China. This is definitely one place I would like to see before I pass due to the huge history behind it. Another reason to visit China would be for the wonderful culture. The Chinese are very proud of their traditions and personally I think the best time to visit would be Chinese New Year when the festivities are in full swing. Also, Chinese cuisine was reported the most favourite takeaways amongst Britons, with delicious dishes such as Egg Foo Yung, spring rolls, fried dumplings and Chow Mein to name a few.

7) Hollywood

Well, Frankie went to Hollywood and I think it’s fair to say he had a pretty good time. The iconic Rodeo Drive, the luxurious designer stores, and the high-profile lifestyle are just a few reasons to visit Hollywood, Los Angeles. Who knows which celebrities you might spot shopping in the designer stores… or should I say which celebs you might see through the window as you gaze in – we’re not made of money! If you’re not shopping with the stars in the chic boutiques or dining in famous restaurants such as Spago, owned by Wolfgang Puck, you could always stand with the stars on the Hollywood walk of fame. Many beloved celebrities such as Walt Disney, Michael Jackson and Fred Astaire are immortalised in the concrete here on Hollywood Boulevard. I think it’s fair to say wherever you go in Hollywood there will be magic in the air as you are surrounded by some of the world’s most rich, famous and adored.

8) Las Vegas

As Elvis once said, “Viva Las Vegas” and it sure does! Vegas is full of life and excitement which is why it is no surprise that it has been named the city that never sleeps. The bright lights attract tourists each year like a moth to a flame ranging from gamblers to art lovers – Vegas has it all. For people interest in the classier side of Las Vegas they may want to visit the famous Bellagio Fountains, the Liberace Museum, or the ever mystifying Cirque Du Soleil show. However, for people who want the Vegas we all know and love, then the places to visit are Caesar’s Palace for the slots and the great shows, the Hard Rock Cafe for the great souvenirs and of course visit downtown Vegas for the nightlife.  A holiday to Las Vegas is often a coming of age experience for people who are reaching milestone birthdays or milestones in their lives such as getting married. You will find plenty of easy-going, fun-loving people in Vegas and if you’re looking for an exciting, unforgettable, adult holiday then Vegas is the one for you.

9) The Grand Canyon

As one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon, situated in Arizona is an amazing site to see. At it’s deepest, the Canyon is around 6000 ft deep and, at its widest, a whopping 18 miles wide. This is definitely one of the places in the world that will put your small being into perspective with the rest of the world; I doubt it is possible to imagine something this big until you see it with your own eyes. I think this is one place which will finally leave me lost for words – not an easy task!

10) New York

“Start spreading the news, I’m leaving today!” Sinatra had the right idea at the time, and he loved the city enough to write a song about it. There is so much to see and do in New York that I don’t know where to start. For lovers of sightseeing, the obvious places to visit are the Empire State Building, Central Park, Time Square and of course the Statue of Liberty. For shopaholics like myself, you will also want to visit Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany’s, Barney’s and Bloomingdales. But don’t be put off by the high-profile stores, most people in the New York area travel to the city for the wonderful discount and thrift stores. For shoppers with a keen eye for fashion it will be easy to pick up a designer-look garment for a fraction of the price.
Personally, I think the perfect time to visit New York would be over the Christmas period. No holiday in the USA is small but Christmas and New Year are particularly big in America. A perfect memory could be created standing with friends and/or family in Time Square as the ball drops on New Years Eve. This is stuff dreams are made of. Oops, I’m sorry, did I say dreams – I meant movies!

11) Rome

The eleventh stepping stone is Rome. This is perfect for historians and lovers of architecture with beautifully intricate buildings such as the Trevi Fountain, the Vatican, the Pantheon, and of course the Colosseum.  The city oozes culture and sophistication as well as artistic design, after all, Rome was home to some of the world’s greatest artists including Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo and Donatello. For me, names which are just as important as those just listed are Gucci, Armani, Prada and Versace. Rome has proudly birthed some of the greatest and most successful designers and the Italian fashions reflect this pride. Personally, as a dedicated food lover, I would travel all the way to Rome simply to eat their cuisine for a week. I, along with apparently a third of the British population, have chosen Italian cuisine as my favourite food. With home-made Bolognese, Lasagne, Pasta and Pizza to look forward to I think I would return home three times my original size and three times as happy. If this blog has not persuaded you to visit Rome then simply watch Eat, Pray, Love starring Julia Roberts and you will hopefully be swayed.

12) India

On a final note, I would like to end with a country of spiritual superiority. But before I talk about the wonderful diversity of faith and religion in India, I will get my rant on food out of the way. Compared to Indian cuisine, our British food might as well be tofu – tasteless! Indian cuisine uses an enormous range of spices to awake and excite the taste buds, but I hope you like it hot!
For people who want to get away from the stress of a busy, city life, nothing is as peaceful and as good for the soul as being surrounded by faith and spirituality. India is a country which proudly plays host to many different religions including Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. Spirituality is at it’s peak at the beautiful Taj Mahal which is currently considered one of the “New” wonders of the world. For those who are not yet sold on India, here is a little something for the hopeless romantics: The Taj Mahal was build as a tribute to the Emperor’s late wife and embodies everlasting, true love, as it was intended to be a symbol of his undying affection for her.
